Catching Lightning in a Bottle: Man and his broom
May 11, 2018 - 2 minutes readSometimes it just happens. Or maybe the opportunity is always there, and it takes seeing it and being ready to make the photo. I absolutely love this photo. Here’s the story. I typically have my camera with me in my car, and I challenge myself to make photos while I’m out and about. I pick a camera body and lens, Nikon D500 and Nikon 17-55 2.8 in this case. I look around when I’m stopped at a light or in traffic and look for moments. I don’t always get perfect moments, who does, but I try to make the best of it. That’s the challenge, right? This moment was handed to me and I saw it. Lucky I saw it! This is by far one of the best situations for a candid moment I could ask for. Note the light coming down on the man and the highlights on his head, jacket, pants, and broom. There is a small shadow behind his feet. The light from the window of the store and on the street behind him really sets the scene. A kiss of light on the pillars, spindles, and grill down by the sidewalk. Everything aligned from a lighting perspective. And I caught it! I once was told find the light and the photo will appear. Damn if that’s not the truth. I hope you enjoy this as much as I do. There is a lot going on in this photo and I’m thrilled I got to make it. I wonder if he sweeps out there often or if the stars aligned and it just worked out. Who knows and it doesn’t matter. Catching lightning in a bottle does happen, just not all the time. It takes making photos every day and some luck.
